What I want from Photokina

September 10, 2012  •  9 Comments

Back from vacation and with hundreds of images to plough through, my thoughts turn to Photokina. This is a fantasy list, not real expectations, but everything below is possible now...

  • I know we'll probably see an M10 with Live View but I want it to be 'through the viewfinder' (not through a carbuncular mansard) and with peaking. Otherwise all my Leica M glass is going and I'm out for good unless we get the next item...
  • I want someone to make a really fine camera for Leica M lenses that has microlens technology that allows the use of lenses wider than 50mm without weak edges and colour shifts.
  • I want a 36mp plus Canon that doesn't do banding, and has their superior AF technology.
  • I want a Sony RX100 variant with an EVF.
  • I want some good glass for NEX or the NEX system is going.
  • I want a Panny GH2 replacement that has weather sealing and better higher ISO performance than the Oly OMD.
  • I want more glass from all comers that can handle high resolution FF sensors to the edges and corners. Zeiss is heading that way.
  • I want a Nikon 24-70 f2.8VRII that weighs no more than 800g.
  • Most of all... I want the D800 sensor in a mirrorless body with a high res EVF and focus peaking along with great quality live view on the LCD, so that we are no longer reliant on a small number of tightly packed focus points, some of which in my experience don't work.

And I want my own dressing room with a star on the door.

AND I want a Pony!

(you can't have it all my friend) unless money is no object. But even then are the rich really happier about the photos they take? I remember seeing a big writeup about Brad Pitt's cameras. Still waiting to see his work.

Can you say Sony A99 to start, then maybe in 2013 a 36mp A99x ??
I have a feeling that the Leica M10 will still have the OVF with the option to put on a EVF on top like the Leica X2. This to me would suck.
Theonl way I would buy back into leica, is a M10 with a built in EVF, I don't really care about peaking as long as you can zoom in for accurate focus.

Amen Brother - the RX-1 loos great and I'd love to play with one, but at that price you'd simply have to have interchangeable lenses. Even without that ability, having an external EVF takes it into the Leica X2 clunkathon territory for me...

Tim, yeah I for one, also wish the NEX-7 could use WA Leica glass effectively. Today the Sony RX-1 was officially released. A pre-release photo I saw showed an EVF, but now I see it doesn't have one. A deal killer for me. But I'm sure others will be happy to use the add-on, but it then becomes less compact. I'll wait for a FF NEX version because I prefer the option to change lenses.

Hi John,

The RX-1 does look interesting but I've never made good mileage with fixed lengths unless they zoom a bit. It seems like having a Ferrari and only driving it on Sundays! Interesting what you say about the NEX7 with Leica glass: I find that 50mm is the shortest focal length that really works, and that is a 75 FOV on the Nex - too long for me. I'd like to use my 35 lux, 28 Cron and 18mm....
